My most favored memory comes from an experience I had when I was a Junior at East. I had two very good girlfriends, both I trusted very much, both unique in special ways, and I believe that my friendships with each of them were and still are the sort of relationship that stands the test of time.

The experience I treasure most relates to one of those two young women, a woman I still remain in touch with, Renee Kimel. Besides a good friendship in school, Renee and I did other activities together including participation in her father's church. He was an ordained Pastor for a local church and I went with them.

Perhaps it was that faith based friendship that led me to such an incredible sense of trust with her specificly. Maybe it was just time and life and going through the same teen experiences together that made reaching out to her possible. As it was, I was glad I had that depth of communication on this one particular night.

I have experienced highs and lows throughout my life, as most of us probably have, but a few of those highs and lows stand out far more significantly. The very worst one I had when in high school ended up occurring that Junior year. Oddly enough, I cannot recall what ended up pushing me to feel so hopelessly sad, just that I had gotten to that point of feeling desperate, lonely and worthless.

Renee lived in my neighborhood and we often met at one or the other house when we wanted to hang out, but this incident was after curfew hours, and I still needed her, so I reached out by phone and shared with her the intense emotions I was feeling, how sad I'd gotten, and how positive I was that life was not worth living. Renee chose to stay on the line with me for several hours, just listening at times, talking at times, or holding quiet when I was quiet, to simply feel the connection and space and trust. To this day, I think she saved my life that night, and it is something I will never forget.

Now she has taken those special skills of hers, that ability to relate to people and care for their needs, and become a professional. She's worked her way up the ladder of success, managing many cases, as a social worker and as a leader/manager over many social workers.

In my opinion, she found a job that related very very well to her talents. I remember when she began her work, long before she was paid for it. I will never forget her help or her love.
